Keshet Chaim Dance EnsembleKeshet Chaim Dance Ensemble

THE CROWN OF ISRAEL MULTIDIMENSIONAL DANCE FANTASIA!

Keshet Chaim, "Rainbow of Life", is a non-profit American-Israeli contemporary dance troupe. The group's repertoire is inspired by Jewish life in many lands and covers a vast span of history, from the time of Solomon and Sheba to the present. Artistic Director Eytan Avisar and his company transcend generations of Jewish thought and emotion through a mosaic of music, dance and color. The company began in l983 and is presently the major professional company of Israeli folk dancers in the United States. The ensemble expresses the global spirit of Judaism and Israeli culture throughout the world, and to combat prejudice through education and the arts. Influenced by world music, the multi-ethnic roots of the Jewish people and a constant drive for interpreting and exploring Jewish values through art, Keshet Chaim has become a pioneer in the development of Jewish dance and seeks to focus its mission by teaching the richness of their culture to Jews and non-Jews alike.

Events produced through the City of Los Angeles include performances at two local high schools, the Latino-speaking Mormon church in downtown Los Angeles, a performance at the John Anson Ford Theatre as part of the "Summer Nights at the Ford" and two collaborations with the Performing Arts Center at Cal State Northridge. Last year the company produced a week of workshops for students at the Skirball Cultural Center and this year their project was a 5-week long residency with Middle School students, culminating in multi-media concerts and workshops for 1,800 students from the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Tours have included Florida, Washington DC, Texas Mexico, Israel and Moscow. The company was included in the Solomon Mikhoels International Arts Festival in Moscow, opening in the Bolshoi Theatre with a second performance in the Tchaikovsky Theatre in September/2000. The audiences of Moscow as well as the press received the company with great enthusiasm. The company also participated in the 2000 Democratic Convention in Los Angeles. In February of 2002, Keshet Chaim participated in an exchange project with the Inbal Dance Theatre from Israel. Twenty-four dancers from Inbal were hosted in Los Angeles for a series of workshops for students, teachers and the public at the Skirball Cultural Center, concluding with three concerts at the University of Judaism in collaboration with Keshet Chaim. In 2004 Keshet Chaim premiered their newest work, "Neshama - Stories of the Soul", a full evening, multi-media work which will be performed together with the renowned singer from Israel, David De'Or.

Eytan Avisar, Artistic Director.

Eitan Avisar portraitEytan began his dancing career on an Israeli kibbutz, where he was influenced and inspired by the holiday festivals. After graduating from the Academy of Dance in Beersheba, Eytan began his world travels with various Israeli folk dance ensembles. In 1968, Eytan toured with Jonathan Karmon's Grand Music Hall of Israel, which was Israel's official representative of Israeli folk dance throughout the world. Eytan performed with the Grand Music Hall in Europe and the United States, appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show. From 1969 through 1973. Eytan was choreographer and lead dancer for Hatzabarim Dance Group, traveling throughout Europe, South Africa, Iceland, Canada and the United States. He also choreographed directed, and produced several other Israeli folk dance troupes associated with various Jewish organizations.

Eytan's experience in choreography and dance has long enlivened audiences and is now enhancing "KESHET CHAIM" (Rainbow of Life), which he founded in 1983. Through his creative vision and interpretation of traditional concepts, he hasraised Israeli dance to new levels. Mr. Avisar is a great believer in education through art and entertainment and Keshet Chaim has provided for him a means of expressing the multi-faceted characteristics of the Jewish people and has allowed him to establish a dialogue with other communities of the world. His vision is for Keshet Chaim to become an institution which will continue to disseminate Jewish culture and perpetuate his love of dance for generations to come.

Genie Benson

Genie Benson (left), Executive Director, joined Keshet Chaim as a dancer in l987 and in l988 became the company's administrator. She is primarily responsible for the company's development as a professional non-profit organization. Her accomplishments include creating financial systems, developing promotional materials, creating new relationships with the concert dance community, utilizing consultants for artistic and marketing projects, and maintaining an ongoing relationship with the press. Genie is responsible for the company bookings and for developing varied programming to keep the company viable and active. She is also in charge of grant writing and fundraising as well as researching, hiring and coordinating artistic staff on all projects. The 92nd Street Y. Is A Major Jewish Culture, Arts and Heritage Center in New York City.

The 92nd Street Y is about people. The people of New York City and the surrounding area. The people of the United States and of the world. It's about people who entertain and challenge, inform and educate. It's about people who learn and discover, observe and participate.

The 92nd Street Y operates in the context of a history that spans over 130 years. Founded in 1874 as the Young Men's Hebrew Association where Jewish men could find harmony and good fellowship, the 92nd Street Y today has evolved into a world-renowned community and cultural center, an organization of exhilarating vitality and remarkable diversity, a proudly Jewish institution that reaches out to people of every race, ethnicity, religion, age and economic class.

At once a lecture hall, a performance space, a school, a health center and a community organization, the Y remains focused on its mission of enriching the lives of the people who pass through its doors - women and men, young families and senior citizens, accomplished artists and aspiring beginners, master instructors and enthusiastic students, world leaders and concerned citizens. The 92nd Street Y is comprised of eight programming centers: Bronfman Center for Jewish Life.: The Bronfman Center, generously endowed by the Samuel Bronfman Foundation, offers a distinguished array of lectures, interviews, classes, workshops and holiday celebrations that explore Jewish ideas and themes. Known as a Jewish home-away-from-home to thousands of adults and children, the Center offers a wide range of programs to those beginning an exploration of Judaism, those continuing their studies and those seeking a better understanding of Jewish values, texts, history and rituals. Lillian & Sol Goldman Family Center for Youth & Family: The Goldman Center provides programs that promote the healthy development and growth of children of all ages. From classes for parents-to-be to extensive activities for teens, the Center, endowed by the Goldman Family, provides a supportive, noncompetitive environment that encourages children and families to reach their maximum potential. Center programs include the award-winning Parenting Center, the Nursery School, the Noar Afterschool Center, 13 summer camps and activities for children with developmental disabilities. Makor/Steinhardt Center: Located at 35 West 67th Street, the Makor/Steinhardt Center is a new entity formed by the Y's June 2001 merger with Makor, the West Side cultural center launched by Michael Steinhardt in 1999. The Makor/Steinhardt Center, a generous gift of the Steinhardt family, houses two innovative programs at its West Side location: Makor and Daytime @ the Steinhardt Building. Makor presents a mix of sophisticated contemporary music performances, film screenings, art exhibits, theater presentations, literary readings, and classes and lectures, many of which are devoted to Jewish topics. Simultaneously, Makor gives New Yorkers in their 20s and 30s opportunities for Jewish exploration and connection within an environment committed to Jewish pluralism and intellectual excellence. Daytime @ the Steinhardt Building is a groundbreaking leisure/learning program that reaches out to a new generation of older adults. At Daytime, adults can meet old friends, make new ones, pick up a new skill, learn about the world from leading thinkers and experts, discuss ideas and opinions or just relax over lunch and a glass of wine. May Center for Health, Fitness & Sport:  The May Center provides adults and children with numerous opportunities for exercise, recreation, health education and participation in competitive sports. Its comprehensive fitness facilities include two air-conditioned gyms, a 25-yard swimming pool, state-of-the-art aerobic and strength conditioning studios, racquetball courts, an indoor jogging track and more than 100 exercise classes weekly. The Center, endowed by Leni and Peter May, also offers programs for special populations through its Coronary Detection & Intervention Center (CDIC); its nutrition, osteoporosis and women's health programs; individual instruction and lectures by leading medical authorities. Milstein/Rosenthal Center for Media & Technology: Endowed in 1999 by two visionary trustees, board chairman Philip Milstein and longtime board member John Rosenthal, the Milstein/Rosenthal Center is spearheading the Y's foray into the technology age. Working with the other centers, the new division is developing and implementing technology-based programs an e-commerce enabled website, long-distance learning, Internet simulcasts, video conferencing and other new media tools that will enable the Y to extend its reach beyond its four walls to communities and constituencies around the world. School of the Arts: The School of the Arts continues the Y's long history of offering outstanding instruction in music, dance and the visual arts. Under its auspices are the School of Music, founded in 1917, the Art Center, founded in 1930, and the Harkness Dance Center, which offered the modern dance movement its first home in America in 1936 and continues to present a dance performance season. Classes are available for all age groups, from preschool children to senior adults, and at all levels of training, from vocational beginners to established professional performers, teachers and choreographers. The School's Educational Outreach Program brings music, dance and art into the lives of 8,000 economically disadvantaged students in the East and Central Harlem neighborhoods directly north of the Y. Charles Simon Center for Adult Life & Learning: The Simon Center offers a unique blend of social, educational and cultural programs for adults at every stage of their lives, from singles to seniors. Internationally known as the presenter of the country's most prestigious lecture series, the Center, endowed by a bequest from Charles Simon, brings the world's finest minds and most intriguing cultural figures to the Y's stage. Additionally, the Center offers diverse personal growth, career development and language classes. The acclaimed de Hirsch Residence and the Y's Buttenwieser Library also fall under the auspices of the Center. Tisch Center for the Arts: The Tisch Center, endowed through the generous support of the Tisch family, produces and presents world-class concerts of classical, world, folk and cabaret music, lyric theater and jazz. The Center's Unterberg Poetry Center, established in 1939, produces a renowned literary reading series that presents the most distinguished writers of our time, offers extensive educational programs for writers of all levels, sponsors an adult literacy project for recent immigrants, and hosts a literary program that brings world-famous authors to meet high school students.

Partnership with Elat Chayyim

Many Jewish people of all ages and from all walks of life express a deep desire to hear the voice of the divine within themselves and have a direct experience of God in their hearts. The 92nd Street Y is proud to bring some of Elat Chayyim’s most powerful programming and best teachers to New York.

Gateways into Jewish Prayer: A Spiritual Guide

Jewish prayer is a rich, mysterious yet often misunderstood tradition within Judaism, at once the ultimate spiritual practice and highly structured. Filled with poetry, powerful imagery, Biblical allusions and the deepest desires of our people, its structure, wordiness and sheer volume may serve to keep our hearts grounded. This series is meant to open the gates of understanding toward a fulfilling life of Jewish prayer.

Life at the Frontier: Courage and Conversation

Every person needs an edge or frontier with the world where a real conversation is possible. This creative conversational edge is difficult to sustain, but an absolute necessity for a vital life amidst the continual demands of living. This workshop will look at the importance of keeping that frontier with family, colleagues, ourselves and the world, by understanding the essential elements of real conversation.

BIO: Poet David Whyte grew up among the hills and valleys of Yorkshire, England. The author of five books of poetry, he is one of the few poets to take his perspectives on creativity into the field of organizational development, where he works with many American and international companies. He holds a degree in Marine Zoology, and has traveled extensively, including working as a naturalist guide and leading anthropological and natural history expeditions. He brings this wealth of experiences to his poetry, lectures and workshops. In organizational settings, using poetry and thoughtful commentary, he illustrates how we can foster qualities of courage and engagement; qualities needed if we are to respond to today’s call for increased creativity and adaptability in the workplace. He brings a unique and important contribution to our understanding of the nature of individual and organizational change. In addition to his five volumes of poetry, David Whyte is the author of The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America, published by Doubleday/Currency, and Crossing the Unknown Sea: Work as a Pilgrimage of Identity, published by Riverhead Books, an audio cassette lecture series, and an album of poetry and music. His fifth volume of poetry, Everything is Waiting for You, was published in October, 2003. He lives with his family in the Pacific Northwest.

“By God, It’s Actually Working!”

Appearance is not essence. Despite the focus of the media on the negativity of world events, the overall level of consciousness in America and the world is confirmably advancing. The collective spiritual intention (via the Heisenberg uncertainty principle) has collapsed the wave function from potentiality to actuality and raised the calibrated level of consciousness of mankind overall from 190 in the early 1980s to the current level of 207 on a calibrated measurable Scale of Consciousness (to be demonstrated). The evolution of consciousness from very ancient paleontological eras on up through evolution and the animal kingdom and then Homo sapiens will be tracked and defined. This understanding elucidates the structure of the ego and thereby facilitates personal spiritual evolution. Traditional religion fought the ego and demonized it as sin and thereby unwittingly strengthened it. New thought recontextualizes the ego, which leads to its dissolution and transcendence. This process is facilitated by the elucidation of the nature of consciousness itself, which will be presented and explained.

Chalanda Sai Ma Lakshmi Devi

“Living in the Vibration of Love”

“Love is a supreme vibration, a supreme energy.  God is Love; Love is God… I am you; You are me”     – Sai Ma. All of us have an inherently divine nature that may be accessed for the development of self-love and the love of others. As we rediscover the divine within, that recognition deepens our spiritual nature and our individual and collective commitment to continued transformation. Honoring the many paths that connect us to God, Chalanda Sai Ma teaches oneness, wholeness, truth and love. Whatever our tradition, Sai Ma guides us to a deeper understanding and experience of our own divine nature, using many different practical tools and experiential pathways. As Sai Ma says, “Loving God is loving all living creatures. God is manifesting itself through all…Together, let us all serve our purpose to its highest. Serving all is our highest puja, our highest worship. Some worship statues and treat man dreadfully. Where is Love in that? We are the living Christ, the living God, humanity.” Chalanda Sai Ma, a Holy Being and a Spiritual Leader, radiates the healing grace of Divine Love.  As a Divine Mother, Sai Ma brings the healing power of love and compassion to humanity.  She answers our heart’s yearning to experience our own true nature, the nature of the Divine. Bold, fearless and passionate in Her efforts to end our suffering, Ma is the inspiration behind Humanity in Unity, a nonprofit, charitable foundation whose purpose is to develop and administer humanitarian projects.  The projects encompass all races, religions, nationalities and cultures.  Honoring the many paths that lead us to God, Ma teaches Oneness, Wholeness, Truth and Love.  Whatever our tradition, Ma guides us to a deeper understanding of ourselves and of the path we have chosen: “The All is in You, the All is You and You are All.”  Sai Ma travels throughout the world serving humanity.  She works tirelessly supporting programs to end poverty and hunger, to care for the sick, to educate our children and to bring peace to the planet.  Ma moves around the planet working quietly with an uncommon personal grace and commitment to bring relief to people of many nations and cultures. Essential to Her work is the message: “As I serve you, so shall you serve others.”

Old Country
Until October 31, 2005 at THE JEWISH MUSEUM, New York.

Old Country (2004)—a 24-minute film adapted from stage work by the Toronto-based company Kaeja d’Dance—offers a contemporary perspective on a European community confronted with the Holocaust. Set in Kutno, Poland in 1939 and in Ottawa, Canada in 2003, the film reflects on tensions between Poles and Jews in a small town. As German soldiers approach Kutno, family members disappear, friendships erode, and lives are betrayed. The film takes the viewer on a kinetic journey using rich cinematography, fluid movement, expressive poetry, and a powerful score. Old Country is based on personal memories of the choreographer's father during World War II.

Old Country premiered on CBC Television in 2004 and is a recent acquisition to The Jewish Museum’s National Jewish Archive of Broadcasting. Founded in 1991, Kaeja Dance is a Toronto-based dance company co-directed by Allen and Karen Kaeja. Their work has been presented at festivals in North America, Europe and Asia and at venues including the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Joan Snyder: A Painting Survey, 1969-2005
August 12, 2005 - October 23, 2005

Joan Snyder: A Painting Survey, 1969-2005, an exhibition that features a selection of thirty-one major works representing more than three decades of the artist’s career. Joan Snyder is an avowed feminist and belongs to the first generation of women artists to identify themselves as such. Along with Elizabeth Murray, Mary Heilman, and Miriam Schapiro, Snyder strove to tame the heroic gestures of male-dominated Abstract Expressionism into a new intimate painterly language. The paintings on view range from monumental (some as large as six by twelve feet) to modest in scale. They take the viewer by surprise as the artist skillfully invests the large canvases with an intensely personal sensibility and the smaller ones with astonishing grandeur.

Snyder gained early recognition with her "stroke paintings" which she made between 1969 and 1973. These works relied on the repeated gesture of a paint-laden brush applied over a grid penciled on the canvas. With the physicality of their drips and marks, the stroke paintings exploited new opportunities for narrative within abstraction. The tension between narrative content and formalism in these works may be seen in the larger context of the art world of the late 1960s, in which cool, hard-edged minimalism was pervasive and painting with any emotional reference was suspect. The artist has said that the strokes are about paint itself—paint moving across the canvas; paint as medium for feelings, sensations, or sounds; paint suggesting a storyline. After making these abstractions, Snyder felt the need to create more complex works, which express her political and social concerns. She moved on to paintings that integrate personal associations she has with her family, feminism, her Jewish heritage, spirituality, and the environment. Consequently her work moved from an implied narrative about the act of making art to a more personal narrative.

Snyder’s works serve as a barometer of her emotional life, simultaneously reflecting specific places in which she has lived, as well as her social concerns and commitment. Works such as Women in Camps (1988) and Study for Morning Requiem with Kaddish (1987-88, in The Jewish Museum’s collection), attest to the artist’s ongoing engagement with social issues, while Moonfield (1986) and Ode to the Pumpkin Field (1986) reveal a feeling of physical and spiritual kinship in nature. Many of the paintings from the 1990s are requiems for the deceased. The devastating losses from AIDS prompted Journey of the Souls (1993), and The Cherry Tree (1993) was inspired by a fruit tree she had seen in a Brooklyn yard as she was driving to visit her dying father. The cherry tree as a metaphor of life and death recurred in many other paintings by Snyder in the 1990s and provided her with a sense of release from grief. Snyder often incorporates collage elements—cloth, dried flowers, branches, seeds, plastic novelties—and painted graffiti-like writing. This scrawled writing, sometimes incised into the paint layer, is as much a part of her artistic vocabulary as the images themselves. In Snyder’s intuitive approach, sensation and idea, image and text, emotion and material fuse to create her unique and highly personal canvases.

The Jewish Identity Project: New American Photography
September 23, 2005 - January 29, 2006

Through photographs and video works by distinguished contemporary artists, The Jewish Identity Project: New American Photography will explore the remarkable racial, social, and ethnic diversity of Jews in the United States today. The Jewish Museum is commissioning projects from a number of photographers and video artists who will collaborate with individuals, families, and organizations across the U.S. to create images that portray the complexity of Jewish identity today. The works of art in the exhibition will raise questions about photography's ability to communicate hybrid identity while examining the breadth and challenges posed by the multiplicity of the American Jewish experience.  The face of American Jews is as varied as the face of America. Thus the exhibition will serve to question stereotypes, challenge traditional assumptions, and look at issues of racism and anti-Semitism in America.

Sarah Bernhardt: The Art of High Drama
December 02, 2005 - April 02, 2006

Sarah Bernhardt: The Art of High Drama is the first major museum show ever devoted to the great French actress (1844-1923). Over the course of a sixty-year career, “the Divine Sarah” established herself as the premier tragedienne in the West. Her very name became synonymous with acting and long after her death it continues to exercise a powerful spell on performers and audiences around the world. Drawing on public and private collections in America and Europe, Sarah Bernhardt will illuminate the life and art of this remarkable performer through a range of spectacular and rarely seen objects in all media—painting, sculpture, photography, costumes, jewelry, stage designs, her furniture and personal effects, as well as selected films in which she starred and recordings of her voice.

The daughter and niece of Jewish courtesans, Bernhardt was baptized a Catholic, but was mercilessly attacked by the popular press for her supposedly Jewish features and behavior. She was a staunch defender of Dreyfus and was said to have appeared at the balcony in defense of Emile Zola the morning angry crowds gathered below his window to protest the publication of J’Accuse. At the same time she was a revered national figure, patriotically serving France during the Franco-Prussian War and World War I.

Bernhardt had an extraordinary trajectory from her beginnings at the Comédie Française to international stardom. In 1880 she undertook the first of nine American tours, which not only established an enduring relationship with audiences in this country but also with American theatrical pioneers like the Shubert brothers. Her brilliantly orchestrated career included the ownership of theaters and the supervision of each of her productions; it was also the product of her savvy cultivation of her public image. Her prescient deployment of technology extended to the first recording of her famous “golden voice” by Thomas Alva Edison at Menlo Park, New Jersey. Bernhardt was also the first major actress to perform on film, a technological novelty that at the time had little artistic cachet. To spectacular international acclaim, she went on to star in eight movies. Among the most represented personages of her time, this extremely thin, frizzy-haired belle juive fascinated her contemporaries: she sat for many of the most fashionable artists of her time, was perhaps the most photographed woman in the world, and attached her name to products ranging from hair curlers to liqueurs. As if this were not enough, Bernhardt was herself a sculptor and painter, which simultaneously heightened her fame and made people suspicious of her manifold talents. Bernhardt’s larger-than-life persona and her extraordinary success as actor and entrepreneur established the template for Hollywood icons as we know them. She was an inspiration for such figures as Fanny Brice, Mae West, Bette Midler, Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, and the eponymous contemporary stand-up comic, Sandra Bernhard. This major loan exhibition will feature works from collections such as the Bibliothèque Nationale, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée du Petit Palais, the Musée Carnavalet, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Musée de la Publicité, the Musée du Costume et de la Mode in Paris; the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Theatre Museum, and the Garrick Club in London; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Museum of the City of New York and the Harvard Theatre Collection in the United States; and numerous other important public and private collections. Through its varied exploration of media and ideas, Sarah Bernhardt will make this enduring figure vivid for contemporary viewers, highlighting both her historical significance and her integral place in modern culture.

The Amazing Debbie Friedman: From Torah to Carnegie Hall

Color Photo of Debbie Friedman

At a gathering of the Kalsman Institute on January 23rd, at the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, Debbie received the Sherut L’Am Award for her “unparalleled contributions to the fields of Jewish music and worship”.  Presenting the award on behalf of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion was Dr. Lewis Barth, who shared words of congratulation from Rabbi David Ellenson, President of HUC-JIR.  Rabbi Bill Cutter spoke of Debbie’s valued participation in the Kalsman Institute, followed by musical tributes to Debbie by Cantor Rosalie Will Boxt, Rabbi Ken Chasen, Cantor Evan Kent, Cantor Jeff Klepper, Doug Mishkin, and Craig Taubman.  Poet Rick Lupert shared an original poem dedicated to Debbie.  Rabbi Ellenson wrote, “Her musical creativity and her sweet and strong voice have touched the lives of so many and she has quite literally transformed the experience of Jewish prayer for hundreds of thousands of people.”  We are very proud of Debbie and all her musical accomplishments!

For those who know Debbie’s music, it has become a treasured part of their lives - a CD listened to every morning on the way to work in order to focus and prepare for the day, or a song like “Mi Shebeirach”, bringing respite and hope into countless lonely hospital rooms.  For children and adults alike, Debbie’s music is living Judaism - from her they learned the Hebrew alphabet, through her they came to love prayers that might otherwise have remained strings of foreign words, unrelated to their lives.  With Debbie’s honest, pure voice as their guide, a whole generation of Jews has come to embrace the words of the prophets and see in the message of the Rabbis and Cantors of old, the spiritual meaning and relevance they seek.  Debbie’s music gives voice to the soul that modern life too often ignores - the soul of individuals and the soul of our People.

A singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Debbie has recorded 19 albums.  Originally influenced by American popular music of the 1960’s and 70’s -- Peter, Paul & Mary, Judy Collins, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell -- she in turn has been influencing younger singers and songwriters with her own dynamic style.  Debbie’s music is so fully integrated into synagogue liturgy, that in many congregations it is considered “traditional.”  Churches, schools, camps, and community centers also find Debbie’s extensive variety of songs to be valuable additions for their teaching and worship use.  Her melodies and lyrics are licensed for hundreds of usages, in recordings, videos, songbooks, prayer books, haggadahs, textbooks, teaching manuals, children’s books, healing publications, new ritual and self help books, and internet websites.  Her work appears in diverse settings from the Barney In Concert video (The Alef Bet Song) to an episode of “Strong Medicine” on the Lifetime channel (The Healing Prayer - Mi Shebeirach).  Tree of Life, a division of Hallmark greeting cards, designed and marketed a series of 12 holiday cards using Debbie’s inspired lyrics.

Debbie’s 1996 Carnegie Hall concert celebrated the 25th anniversary of her distinguished musical career.  She has performed in hundreds of cities in the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel.  She has appeared before national conventions and conferences for major Jewish organizations, including the General Assembly of Jewish Federations, Hadassah, Union of American Hebrew Congregations, Rabbinical Assembly, Cantors Assembly, Wexner Heritage Foundation, Whizin Institute, National Association of Temple Educators, National Association of Temple Administrators, Central Conference of American Rabbis, Women of Reform Judaism, World Union for Progressive Judaism, World Jewish Congress, American Jewish Congress, American Jewish Committee, National Federation of Temple Youth, and United Synagogue Youth. Debbie served as cantorial soloist for three years at the New Reform Congregation in Los Angeles, California.  As a music educator, she directed the music component of the intensive Hebrew Chalutzim program at Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin where she continues to co-lead Hava Nashira, the annual songleading and music workshop she created.  She has served on the faculty of the Jewish Perspectives on Care at the End of Life Symposium at Duke University Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina, the Summer Institute for Jewish Educators, co-sponsored by the University of Judaism and the Whizin Institute in Los Angeles, the Kalsman Institute of Hebrew Union College, the Academy for Jewish Religion in New York, the Elat Chayyim Jewish Spiritual Retreat Center in the Catskill Mountains of New York, the Brandeis Bardin Institute in Brandeis, California, and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations summer Kallah programs held at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, the University of California at Santa Cruz, and Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, New Hampshire.  Debbie teaches workshops, directs a 300 person chorale, performs in concert and spiritually inspires the several thousand delegates who attend the annual conference of the Coalition For The Advancement of Jewish Education.

Our Great Garden: Nurturing Planet Earth
September 26, 2004 - June 18, 2006

The Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam translates from Hebrew to “Repairing the World.” This new exhibition for families and children explores ways in which we can fulfill this value in our daily lives, through appreciation and protection of the natural environment. The exhibit focuses on three central themes — appreciating the beauty of nature, understanding our responsibility to take care of the natural world, and using our resources responsibly — and looks at these themes through the lens of Jewish values. The first section of the exhibition explores beauty in nature, with an installation of constructed trees and plants, and several interactive art activities designed to inspire an appreciation for the wonder and awe of the natural world. The second section focuses on caring for the natural world and encourages children to think about home and family, material resources, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Through a variety of activities within a nest environment, children will evaluate how they fit into the ecosystem and reflect on ways to preserve it. In the third section, children will learn about reusing and recycling materials in their daily lives to gain maximum potential from natural resources while preserving the earth. Interactive art projects using recycled materials will stimulate creativity and appreciation for the multiple and artistic uses of common objects
